Coral Reef House on Bangka Island, North Sulawesi

PT Pelni (Persero) submerged an artificial coral reef with a seahorse motif in the waters of Bangka Island, North Minahasa Regency, in the 5th Coral Day series to encourage maritime tourism in North Sulawesi. Pelni Passenger Transportation Business Director O. M. Sodikin revealed that his party is working with PT Pelindo IV (Persero) in the manufacture of artificial coral reefs as part of the synergy of SOEs through environmental development. "Because in the waters of Bangka Island, it is easy to find seahorses, we call this home a coral reef by the name of domus hippocampi or seahorse house," he said on Bangka Island, North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi, on Saturday (11/24/2018).

He revealed that this project was not the first time carried out by Pelni. Previously, Pelni also participated in artificial coral reefs in the Thousand Islands (DKI Jakarta) and Batu Licin (South Kalimantan). "We hope that this artificial reef can encourage maritime tourism, in addition to encouraging the preservation of coral reefs," he said. The hope, continued Sodikin, through planting artificial coral reefs and a number of strategies to encourage tourism, there will be an increase in the standard of living of the surrounding community.

General Manager of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) IV in Bitung area Damianto Pangaribuan added that the planting of Domus Hippocampi's coral reefs coincided with the 5th Coral Day held on Bangka Island, North Minahasa. "Natural beauty, especially coral, hopes to improve tourism so that it can improve people's livelihoods. In addition, the hope is that it can also have a multiplier effect on the community's economy and ecology, "he said. Chairperson of the Terumbu Rupa Foundation, Asrul Hanif Arifin, added that some time ago when there was stripping of land for mining areas on Bangka Island, a number of corals in the waters of Bangka Island many died. "We already made one. With this, it means adding one more, "he said.

On the other hand, Ulfa Novita Take, founder of the Suara Pulau Foundation, hopes that the inauguration of Domus Hippocampi's coral reefs coinciding with the 5th Coral Day can encourage the community, especially children, to get to know more about coral reefs. East Likupang Sub-District Head Doni Rondonuwu hopes that the community especially those in Lihunu Village can support conservation efforts and protect the coral reefs in the area. "We as the government are ready to support. If there is a problem, please convey it to us, then we will convey it directly to the Regent [Vonnie Anneke Panambunan], "said Doni.
