PT PELNI (Persero), through its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSR) program, officially launched an Independent Village in Sukanagalih Village, Cianjur Regency, West Java, on Friday (13/12). The initiative aims to ensure a consistent supply of vegetables for PELNI’s passenger ships, which serve thousands of people daily. The launch ceremony was attended by PELNI’s Director of Finance and Risk Management Anik Hidayati, President Director of PELNI Services Sukendra, Vice President of Treasury Fauziah Ferryna, Head of Sukanagalih Village Dudung Djaenudin, and several local community leaders.
Anik Hidayati explained that PELNI has a high demand for food supplies, given that the company transports up to 14,000 passengers each day. “Currently, in addition to Jakarta, we have designated Surabaya, Makassar, and Ambon as supply centers. Through this Independent Village, we gain access to a reliable source of fresh vegetables directly from the farmers,” said Anik. These supplies will be distributed through Tanjung Priok Port to the ships.
To support the implementation, PELNI is collaborating with the Village Development Study Center of Brawijaya University and has appointed its subsidiary, PELNI Services (PT Pelita Indonesia Djaya), to absorb agricultural produce directly from the village. Located in the highlands of Pacet Subdistrict at around 935 meters above sea level, Sukanagalih has a daily temperature range of 18–27°C and annual rainfall of about 110 mm—ideal conditions for vegetable farming.
Beyond securing the vegetable supply chain, the program is also focused on empowering local farmers to become more independent and productive. “We will provide technical training to modernize their farming systems, making them more efficient while maintaining environmentally friendly practices,” said Fauziah Ferryna. This support is expected to enhance farmers’ capacity and ensure the quality of the crops.
Currently, PELNI Services has partnered with farmers cultivating 3,880 square meters of land, producing 56 types of vegetables. The main crops include string beans and long beans. All harvests are absorbed directly by PELNI, ensuring stable prices and offering reliable income to local farmers.
This Independent Village program is part of PELNI’s broader CSR efforts, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by Indonesia’s Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises. In addition to its social impact, the program also addresses economic, environmental, and governance aspects to deliver long-term value for both the community and the company.
