PELNI Ships Undergo 'Lab Check' to Ensure They Are Fit to Serve Christmas and New Year Holiday Passengers
Jakarta, November 19, 2024 -- PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia or PT PELNI (Persero) ensures that it is ready to undergo a ramp check conducted by the port authority. This inspection is carried out to ensure that all PELNI ships are seaworthy while serving the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year Transportation.
PELNI President Director Tri Andayani said that the ramp check is a series of preparations for PELNI ships that are always carried out before entering the Christmas and New Year holiday period. "Like athletes who are going to compete, a series of check-lab checks will definitely be carried out, so will ships. The authorities will ensure that all navigation and safety equipment on board the ship is ready and seaworthy. Every time Eid and Christmas and New Year approaches, all PELNI ships will definitely undergo spot checks," Anda said.
Spot checks are generally carried out by a marine inspector representing the Harbor Master's Office and the Port Authority. For PELNI ships, both passenger ships and pioneer ships, they will undergo spot checks at several large ports such as Tanjung Priok Jakarta, Tanjung Perak Surabaya, Makassar, Ambon to Bitung.
The series of checks that are tested include the readiness of safety equipment such as lifeboats, navigation devices, and the expiration date of the ship's certificate. During the spot checks, the marine inspector will be accompanied by the Captain or the Head of the local PELNI Branch.
"If necessary, the lifeboats are tested by being lowered into the sea to ensure they are ready for use in an emergency. As the main message of the Government, we are ready to provide excellent, safe and comfortable sea transportation to serve passengers during the Christmas and New Year period," Anda added.
The Ministry of Transportation itself ordered a spot test through the Instruction of the Director General of Sea Transportation Number: IR-DJPL 7 of 2024 concerning the Seaworthiness Test of Passenger Ships for Christmas Transportation in 2024 and New Year 2025. The series of spot tests were carried out starting from November 1, 2024 at class I to class IV ports with a total of 55 port areas in Indonesia.
As of November 19, 2024, 16 passenger ships have completed spot tests, and 9 other passenger ships will soon follow. "We ensure that in all its activities all PELNI ships will comply with the regulations and provisions set by the shipping authorities in Indonesia," Anda emphasized.
During the 2024/2025 Nataru Transportation period, PELNI will deploy 25 passenger ships and 30 pioneer ships, with the note that one passenger ship, namely KM Umsini, is still out of operation. The Nataru service period for PELNI ships itself lasts from December 11, 2024 to January 8, 2025.
