PELNI Strengthens Commercial Business, Successfully Transports First 55 Thousand Tons of Coal

Jakarta, May 12, 2026 – PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (PELNI) or PT PELNI (Persero) recorded significant growth in its commercial cargo transportation business in 2026. As of April 2026, PELNI has transported a total of 218,918.964 metric tons (MT) of commercial cargo, consisting of 95% coal and 5% bulk fertilizer. This achievement reflects a 338% year-on-year growth compared to the same period last year.

One of these achievements was marked by the successful execution of PELNI’s first large-scale coal shipment using a Supramax bulk carrier vessel with a cargo capacity of 55,000 MT. This maiden shipment was carried out under a voyage charter scheme using MV Majestic Laksono. The shipment took place in April 2026, transporting cargo from Bontang to Surabaya.

PELNI’s Director of Cargo Business and Sea Toll, Kokok Susanto, stated that the utilization of Supramax-sized charter vessels represents a strategic move by PELNI to meet market demand for large-scale bulk commodity logistics services.

“This maiden coal shipment carrying 55 thousand tons is a strategic step by PELNI in accelerating the performance of our cargo business. We continue to enhance our logistics capabilities to provide reliable, efficient, and highly competitive transportation solutions,” said Kokok.

Kokok Susanto added that the successful transportation using a Supramax vessel is part of PELNI’s building capacity strategy to strengthen its competencies in commercial cargo transportation, particularly for large-scale bulk commodities. This experience also serves as a new portfolio for PELNI’s cargo business line in expanding its national maritime logistics service coverage.

“We are optimistic that the development of the commercial cargo transportation segment, particularly bulk commodities such as coal, will make a significant positive contribution to the company’s future performance. PELNI is also ready to expand cooperation with various strategic partners to support national logistics needs and strengthen Indonesia’s energy security,” added Kokok.

In addition, PELNI has also implemented a sharing capacity strategy through cooperation with shipowners to improve operational flexibility and optimize cargo transportation services.

Through the success of this maiden shipment, PELNI further strengthens its position as a reliable and competitive maritime logistics service provider. PELNI is optimistic about becoming a trusted logistics partner for the national energy industry while contributing to supporting Indonesia’s strategic commodity supply chain.
