PELNI’s CSR Inaugurates Reading Garden in South Ternate to Promote Literacy and Public Education
South Ternate, July 31, 2025 – PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia or PT PELNI (Persero), through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, officially inaugurated a Reading Garden in Sasa Subdistrict, South Ternate on Thursday (7/31).
The event was attended by PELNI’s Finance and Risk Management Director Anik Hidayati, Passenger Transportation Business Director Nuraini Dessy, Mayor of Ternate Dr. M. Tauhid Soleman, PELNI Ternate Branch Head Lutfi Israr, PELNI Vice President of Treasury and CSR Fauziah Ferryna, Ternate City Literacy Ambassador Marliza M. Tauhid, as well as several local officials and community leaders.
PELNI’s Finance and Risk Management Director Anik Hidayati stated that this initiative is a collaboration between PELNI, the Ternate City Government, and Relawan Nusantara, involving a range of innovative activities.
“We’re hosting a variety of activities including a creativity week focused on developing handicraft skills and fostering creativity, as well as a language tourism week introducing the local Ternate, Tidore, and English languages through interactive learning. Many other activities will also be held, all of which are designed to benefit the local community,” explained Anik.
Additionally, PELNI’s CSR program features an imagination week to enhance public speaking and digital literacy skills, a religious week for Quranic studies and spiritual value discussions, and fun learning—an outdoor educational program designed for orphans, underprivileged children, and coastal learning communities using a “learning through play” approach.
The volunteer program serves as one of the core pillars, involving PELNI employees directly in collaborative activities with local children and residents. The Reading Garden is equipped with books, study materials such as laptops, cabinets, LED TV, whiteboards, bookshelves, study tables, carpets, and other learning infrastructure, all provided by PELNI to create a comfortable and supportive learning space.
“This Reading Garden reflects PELNI’s commitment to supporting literacy development in eastern Indonesia. With the facilities and programs we’ve introduced, we hope to address the challenges of illiteracy in this region,” Anik added.
Through this initiative, PELNI’s CSR program aims not only to promote literacy but also to empower local communities through educational and inspiring activities.
All of PELNI’s CSR programs are based on the pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as declared by the United Nations and adopted by the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises in CSR programs across all SOEs. In addition to social aspects, PELNI’s CSR pillars include economic, environmental, and governance components.
