All Passenger Ships Have Installed MES, Strengthening Ship Safety PELNI Serves Nataru Transportation
Jakarta, November 12, 2024 -- PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia or PT PELNI (Persero) has equipped all its passenger ships with marine evacuation system or MES safety equipment. Next year, PELNI plans to reinstall it so that each ship has two MES units for each side of the ship's deck.
PELNI Fleet and Engineering Director Robert MP Sinaga said that the installation of MES on all ships has been completed. The last ship to have MES installed was KM Binaiya last September. "Installation of MES in 2024 on 22 ships, and four ships have been installed by the end of 2023," said Robert.
The presence of MES on PELNI ships, added Robert, will add to the completeness of safety equipment for passengers in an emergency. In addition to life jackets, lifeboats and rubber boats that already exist on PELNI ships. All PELNI safety equipment will undergo annual inspections as part of maintenance.
MES itself is a safety net that can be used during evacuation by lowering passengers from the ship's deck to rubber boats that are waiting on the surface of the sea. "With MES, passengers can get to the rubber boat without having to jump from a height, so that the risk can be minimized and evacuation can proceed faster," explained Robert.
On 26 PELNI passenger ships, a total of 72,816 life jackets, 1,794 life-raft units with a total capacity of 44,850 people, and 226 lifeboat units with a total capacity of 25,805 people are available.
In 2025, Robert ensured that MES was reinstalled to complete the availability of MES on each side of the ship. The existence of MES on each side of the ship has been regulated in the international regulation SOLAS 1974 which was adopted by Indonesia in 1980.
Meanwhile, to ensure the readiness of PELNI ships to serve Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 transportation, the Ministry of Transportation will conduct spot checks on all PELNI ships.
Spot checks are carried out to ensure that all navigation equipment and safety equipment on board the ship can function properly. If any discrepancies are found during spot checks,
The Ministry of Transportation provides a deadline until November 30, 2024 for repairs to be made.
