Jakarta, 15 November 2020 - PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Persero) - PT PELNI (Persero) is optimistic about the increasing number of passengers traveling by passenger ships by the end of the year. The company projects that in the fourth quarter of 2020, the ship can carry up to 343,472 customers.
Head of Passenger Secretariat of PT PELNI Yahya stated the company's optimism for the increase in passenger numbers, supported by passenger growth throughout the third quarter of 2020. "In the third quarter of 2020, the number of passengers has increased every month. We are optimistic that with the operation of the entire ship fleet and the reopening of several routes, the number of passengers will continue to grow in the fourth quarter, especially in the upcoming Nataru period," said Yahya.
The company noted that there was a 240% increase in passengers from June to July or from 18,144 subscribers to 61,733 customers. The 47% increase occurred from July (61,733 subscribers) to August (90,916 subscribers) and from August to September the increase occurred by 30% or from 90,916 subscribers to 118,228.
For information, until October 2020 PELNI passenger ships have carried a total of 1,584,197 customers. As for 1,289,754 passengers have traveled on passenger ships and 294,091 passengers have traveled on pioneer ships.
Yahya added that PELNI still sells tickets as much as 50% of the ship's capacity. This is done following Government policy to continue to apply physical distancing while on the ship.
All PELNI passenger ships are also equipped with medical personnel and polyclinic facilities, hand washing equipment on each deck/floor of the ship, providing distance between passenger seats to avoid contact between passengers. "The dining service is now self-service and is available on every deck of the ship. This was done to limit the interaction between passengers and the crew on duty, "added Yahya.
PELNI is a State-Owned Enterprise that operates in the field of sea transportation has currently operated as many as 26 passenger ships and visited 83 ports and served 1,100 sections.
In addition to passenger transportation, PELNI also serves 45 pioneer ship routes which become a means of accessibility for population mobility in the 3TP area where pioneer vessels stop at 275 ports with 3,739 sections. PELNI also operates a total of 20 Rede vessels. Whereas in the logistics business services, PELNI now operates 4 cargo ships, 8 sea toll vessels, and 1 cattle-specific vessel.
