PELNI Utilizes Low Earth Orbit Satellite to Strengthen Ship Communication Systems
Jakarta, January 27, 2026 – PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Persero) or PT PELNI (Persero) has implemented a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite-based Ship Communication System (SisKomKap) as part of its digital transformation across the entire passenger vessel fleet. This initiative was marked by the Kick Off Meeting for the Procurement of SisKomKap Services held aboard KM Nggapulu at Tanjung Priok Port on Tuesday (27/1).
The modernization of the communication system is being carried out through a strategic partnership with PT Dwi Tunggal Putra (DTP) for a period of 36 months. The Kick Off Meeting was attended by PELNI Director of Finance and Risk Management Anik Hidayati, President Director of PT Dwi Tunggal Putra Sugeng Alfien, Vice President for Southeast and East Asia of Eutelsat Bala Balamurali, PELNI Vice President of Information Technology Angga Krisosa, and the Master of KM Nggapulu, Capt. Roberto Matualage.
The SisKomKap services to be implemented include infrastructure such as high bandwidth, IP Phone (VoIP), Satellite Phone, and enhanced cybersecurity on each vessel. Additional features include On Time Performance (OTP) analysis and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver to monitor surrounding conditions in real time.
PELNI Director of Finance and Risk Management Anik Hidayati stated that digitalization is a vital part of realizing the company’s vision and mission and must be implemented across all business processes, including daily ship operations.
“This project not only strengthens the communication infrastructure of our fleet, but also forms part of PELNI’s commitment to implementing Good Corporate Governance and improving maritime safety,” said Anik.
Anik also explained that with LEO technology, PELNI passenger ships will be able to provide more reliable communication services, support real-time coordination between ship crews and onshore teams, and ensure passenger comfort.
“We highly appreciate our cooperation with PT Dwi Tunggal Putra in procuring LEO-based SisKomKap services. PELNI is committed to continuing its digital transformation in line with its vision to become a leading and globally competitive shipping company that supports connectivity and Indonesia’s maritime logistics ecosystem,” Anik added.
PELNI is committed to being a pioneer in providing safe, comfortable, and affordable sea transportation in Indonesia. By integrating technological innovations such as the LEO-based SisKomKap, PELNI continues to improve operational safety and the quality of passenger services. In addition, this initiative is expected to strengthen interregional connectivity, support maritime economic growth, and contribute to national logistics efficiency.
