Celebrate The fifth Year, PT PELNI's Sea Highway Cargo Keeps Growing Consistently

PELNI has distributed sea toll cargo totaling 22,497 TEUs

Jakarta, 4 November 2020 - PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia or PT PELNI (Persero) has completed the assignment of the Sea Toll Program for five years, today, Wednesday (4/11) since its launch on November 4, 2015. For five years operating marine toll ships, PELNI has distributed sea toll cargo totaling 22,497 TEUs to underdeveloped, remote, outermost and border areas or 3TP.

PT PELNI's Goods Transportation Business Director Masrul Khalimi explained that in the first year or 2015, the PELNI marine toll ships were recorded to only carry 99 TEUs of cargo. "But public trust continues to grow from year to year to take advantage of marine toll ships. In 2020, the total maritime toll cargo is 6,637 TEUs, consisting of 4,401 TEUs of departing cargo and 2,236 TEUs of return cargo, "Masrul said.

Especially for this year, evidence of the successful role of marine toll ships in growing the economy in the 3TP area is shown in one of them is Morotai Island Regency which is served by two marine toll ships, KM Logistik Nusantara or Lognus 3 and KM Lognus 6.

"Morotai has been included in the maritime highway route since 2017. But starting in September 2020, the local government asked for an additional maritime highway ship because the return cargo that was not transported was only one ship. The addition of sea toll ships in Morotai proves that there is an increase in the economy in the region, ”added Masrul. Apart from stimulating the local business climate, the regular schedule of marine toll ships also plays a major role in reducing and maintaining the stability of prices for basic necessities in Morotai.

As regulated in Presidential Decree 71/2015, the cargo that is allowed to be transported by sea highway consists of categories of basic agricultural products such as rice, soybeans, chilies and shallots; basic industrial needs (sugar, cooking oil, wheat flour); basic needs of livestock and fishery products (beef, chicken, eggs, fresh fish); essential goods (seeds, fertilizers, 3kg LPG gas, plywood, cement, steel, mild steel) and other goods (mineral water, garlic, salt, medicines and so on).

In the early stages of the marine highway program being launched, PT PELNI became the only marine toll operator. However, along with the development of the maritime highway program, there are several operators apart from PT PELNI, namely other state-owned companies and private shipping companies.

The success of PT PELNI in implementing the Sea Toll Road Program was proven by winning awards as "BUMN Operator with the Most Load Factor in Semester 1 for Special Animal Transport Service Activities" and "Operator with the Most Load in Semester 1 for Sea Toll Activities" from the Ministry of Transportation on July 16, 2020.

Early in the implementation of the Sea Toll program, PT PELNI received three routes, namely T-1 (KM Caraka Jaya Niaga III-22), T-2 (KM Caraka Jaya Niaga III-32) and T-3 (KM Caraka Jaya Niaga III-4) . Then, as the Government's trust increases in PT PELNI to carry out sea highway assignments, there are additional routes every year, namely in 2016 as many as six routes, in 2017 and 2018 as many as seven routes, and in 2019 receiving three hub routes and ten feeder routes.

In the fifth year of this marine highway program, PT PELNI received as many as eight sea highway assignment routes, namely:

H-1: Tg. Perak - Makassar - Tahuna - Tg. Perak (KM Logistik Nusantara 1)

T-3: Tg. Priok - Tarempa - Natuna - Serasan - Midai - Tg. Priok (KM Logistik Nusantara 4)

T-5: Bitung - Tahuna - Tagulandang - Lirung - Miangas - Marore - Bitung (KM Kendhaga Nusantara 1)

T-10: Tg. Perak - Tidore - Buli - Maba - Veda - Tg. Perak (KM Logistik Nusantara 6)

T-13: Tg. Perak - Rote - Sabu - Tg. Perak (KM Kendhaga Nusantara 11)

T-14: Tg. Silver - Loweleba - Larantuka - Tg. Perak (KM Kendhaga Nusantara 7)

T-15: Tg. Perak - Makassar - Jailolo - Morotai - Tg. Perak (KM Logistik Nusantara 3)

T-18: Tg. Perak - Badas - Bima - Merauke - Bima - Tg. Perak (KM Logistik Nusantara 2)

For information, PT PELNI recorded that the most cargo transported in 2020 was industrial materials such as logs, cement, plywood, zinc, ceramics, construction steel, mild steel and asphalt, amounting to 390 TEUs. As of October 2020, there was an increase in cargo of 178% from 2,396 TEUs in 2019 to 6,653 TEUs.

"PT PELNI continues to optimize the implementation of sea highway operations and maximize the operation of Rumah Kita as a logistics center for marine toll ship cargo. Rumah Kita is the idea of the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of BUMN by collaborating with BUMN, BUMD, and BUMDes to create public welfare by maintaining the prices of basic and important goods, "Masrul said.

The Head of the PT PELNI Corporate Secretariat, Yahya Kuncoro, on the same occasion added that PELNI is optimistic that in the fourth quarter of 2020 the performance of the sea highway will continue to increase along with the increasing needs of the Indonesian people, especially in the 3TP area. "The company hopes that in the fifth year of the sea toll program, the public will benefit more from the program launched by President Joko Widodo, especially to ensure economic connectivity between islands and reduce disparities in goods prices," added Yahya.

PT PELNI as a state-owned company engaged in sea transportation has operated 26 passenger ships and stopped at 83 ports and served 1,100 segments.

Apart from passenger transportation, PELNI also serves 45 pioneer ship routes which are a means of accessibility for population mobility in the 3TP area where pioneer ships stop at 275 ports with 3,739 sections.
