Jakarta, November 1, 2024 – PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia or PT PELNI (Persero) held a series of workshops to increase awareness of shipping safety on passenger ships. The safety workshop activities in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation have been held on four PELNI ships since August until the end of October.
PELNI Fleet and Engineering Director Robert MP Sinaga said that this safety workshop activity was an initiative of Management, including the PELNI Board of Commissioners. "As a transportation service provider, shipping safety is our priority. For that, this workshop is a moment to hone the skills of ship crews in handling emergency situations," said Robert.
As a representative of Management, Robert added, he reminded all ship crews to always implement ship safety management during the voyage.
"And no less important is to consistently conduct emergency drills or safety drills, so that when an emergency occurs, each ship's crew knows and carries out their role effectively and is able to handle emergency situations quickly," he explained.
The series of PELNI safety workshops began at KM Bukit Raya on the Tanjung Priok, Jakarta to Kijang voyage on August 22-24, 2024, followed by KM Gunung Dempo (Jakarta - Makassar, August 29 - September 1); KM Dobonsolo (Jakarta - Surabaya, October 2-3); and finally at KM Ciremai (Surabaya - Jakarta, October 30-31).
At the workshop at KM Ciremai yesterday, PELNI presented a number of speakers from the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation. The speakers included the technical inspector of the ship of the Directorate of Shipping and Maritime Affairs of the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation Hendra Arthur Toloh, and the Sub-Coordinator of Economy Class Passengers and People's Shipping of the Directorate of Traffic and Sea Transportation of the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation Andre Zulfa.
Meanwhile, also accompanying the PELNI management were PELNI President Commissioner Muhammad Awaluddin, PELNI Independent Commissioner Kristia Budiyarto, PELNI Fleet and Technical Director Robert MP SINAGA, and Head of DPA QHSSE Fauzi Indrijanto Nugroho. KM Ciremai on the Surabaya - Jakarta voyage was captained by Capt. Roberto Matualage.
For information, all PELNI passenger ships have been equipped with various types of safety equipment, such as life jackets, lifeboats, and rubber boats. On all PELNI passenger ships, there are a total of 72,816 life jackets, 1,794 life rafts with a total capacity of 44,850 people, and 226 lifeboats with a total capacity of 25,805 people.
PELNI has also installed a marine evacuation system safety device in the form of a slide net. This safety device allows the evacuation of passengers on board to the rubber lifeboat.
Meanwhile, Head of DPA QHSSE PELNI Fauzi Indrijanto said that all PELNI ships are currently in the process of obtaining ISO 9001:2015 certification on Quality Management Systems and ISO 45001:2018 on K3 Management Systems.
"At the end of this year, the implementation of external audits has been scheduled for KM Kelud, KM Lawit, KM Nggapulu, KM Wilis, and KM Sirimau
In addition to three Logistik Nusantara cargo ships. For the Quality Management System guidelines, we have implemented them on all passenger ships," said Fauzi.
