PELNI Serves Over 5 Million Passengers Throughout 2024

Jakarta, January 17, 2025 – PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia or PT PELNI (Persero) successfully recorded a total of 5,095,306 passengers traveling across PELNI routes throughout 2024. This achievement solidifies PELNI’s position as the leading provider of sea transportation connecting various regions in Indonesia, from major islands to remote areas.

The increase in passenger numbers was particularly noticeable during the 2024 Eid and Christmas-New Year holiday periods. During Eid 2024, PELNI served 641,013 passengers, an increase of 1.4% compared to 2023, which recorded 632,155 passengers.

Meanwhile, during the 2024/2025 Christmas-New Year period, passenger numbers reached 551,383, an 8.7% increase surpassing the initial projection of 507,054 passengers.

President Director of PT PELNI (Persero), Tri Andayani, stated that the rise in passenger numbers was influenced by several factors. “We observed that the increase in passengers in 2024 was driven by high travel frequency during peak seasons, such as Eid and Christmas-New Year. The ongoing modernization of ship facilities has also been a major draw for the public to choose PELNI for their travel. Additionally, we believe that the ease of booking PELNI tickets through various digital platforms has made PELNI a preferred mode of transportation for many,” she explained.

However, PELNI faced a significant challenge in 2024 regarding an incident involving KM Umsini. This incident led to KM Umsini ceasing operations in mid-June 2024, impacting the potential increase in passenger numbers for the remainder of the year.

“We want to assure the public that PELNI is not only recovering from this incident but is also committed to improving its service to provide safe, comfortable, and affordable sea transportation. We are optimistic about entering 2025 with renewed enthusiasm to enhance sea transportation services and remain the public's top choice,” she added.

As directed by the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, PELNI remains optimistic about 2025, committed to strengthening its role as Indonesia's primary sea transportation provider and enhancing digital purchase channels.
