Head of PT PELNI Corporate Secretariat Opik Taufik said that the RKS Kampung PELNI Baubau was the third RKS program initiated by PT PELNI in collaboration with the GMC Foundation which also participated in the two previous RKS programs. “Baubau City was chosen by the Management because the route of the PELNI ship that stops at Baubau is one of the largest with passenger occupancy which is always crowded. In addition, the problem of waste in Baubau City is also quite high," he said.
PT PELNI's Waste Management House (RKS) is a tangible manifestation of BUMN for Indonesia through the TJSL program which is aimed at empowering the community in managing household waste, including waste from the PELNI Ship to be converted into goods of sale value, both organic fertilizer and handicrafts.
“The RKS Village is also expected to be able to build community independence by providing added value from household waste into goods of sale value. By improving their skills in creating waste, they can turn it into a MSME product and get financial benefits from this waste,” explained Opik.
PELNI Baubau Village RKS Program, PT PELNI collaborated with the GMC Foundation which previously together with PT PELNI had successfully run the same program in Tanah Bambu - South Kalimantan in 2018 and Bima City - West Nusa Tenggara in 2019. "We hope that the Baubau City Government can support activities in PELNI Baubau Village and help promote RKS MSME products in order to reach a wider market, "explained Opik.
Opik added, as many as 11 passenger ships and 2 rede ships belonging to PT PELNI stopped and docked at the Port of Murhum Baubau. The average waste produced by PELNI ships in one day is 2.5 tons. “Within a month this RKS can reduce waste in Baubau City by an average of 60 tons from PELNI ships. Meanwhile, household waste produces up to 1 ton of waste in about a month,” explained Opik.
RKS Kampung PELNI Baubau is currently equipped with one unit composting machine and an operational motor for transporting waste. “We plan to add a plastic press machine to process plastic waste. We will also provide assistance for two years until the community can be independent and create jobs for the community in the RKS PELNI Baubau Village environment, "explained Opik.
The company hopes that the presence of TJSL - RKS Kampung PELNI Baubau can improve the quality of life of the surrounding community and encourage the community's economy.
