PT PELNI (Persero) lowered an artificial reef structure 15 meters long and 5 meters high on Bangsring Beach, Banyuwangi, Monday (14/12). The structure, which is named Domus Coronarius Circularis, is a collaboration between PT PELNI and the Rupa Reef Foundation, which is led by an artist and diver, Teguh Ostenrik.
PT PELNI Head of Corporate Secretary, Yahya Kuncoro, said that 2020 will be the fourth year for the implementation of the Community Development Program which is committed to the concept of marine ecosystem conservation. The decline in structure also coincided with the 2020 Nusantara Day which fell the previous day.
"The name of this structure contains the word Corona to remember how big the impact it has on all industrial sectors, including tourism. With the presence of this structure under the sea of Bangsring Beach, Banyuwangi PELNI hopes to help restore tourism conditions in the region," explained Yahya.
The artist, Teguh Ostenrik, created a giant structure with a laser carving that resembles the COVID-19 virus. For its name, 'Domus' itself means home to coral reefs. Meanwhile, 'Coronarius' has a meaning as a marker of the nation's awakening from the pandemic caused by the COVID-19 Virus. As well as 'Circularis' which represents the wheel of life where the time will come when we all come out of the crisis at hand.
The artificial reef house has been submerged at a depth of 15 meters and is shaped like a hallway with a length of 15 meters, a width of 5 meters and a height of 3 meters. It took 40 people on land to bring the 2 tonne structure to shore and another 40 people in diving equipment to bring and lower the structure under the sea.
Yahya believes that the existence of artificial reefs on Bangsring Beach will become a new tourism icon on Bangsring Beach. "We hope that the presence of this artificial reef can encourage local and international people and tourists to jointly preserve the underwater ecosystem for future generations," said Yahya.
This is not the first time that PELNI has done this submerging of coral reefs. Previously, PELNI has contributed to the sinking of artificial coral reef structures 'Domus Arcae Similis' on Sepa Island - Kepulauan Seribu (2017), 'Domus Hippocampi' on Bangka Island - North Sulawesi (2018), and 'Domus Frosiquilo' on Jikomalomo Beach - Ternate (2019).
PELNI's concern for marine ecosystems also increasingly shows that PELNI's TJSL (Environmental Social Responsibility) activities are in line with SDG's (Suistanable Development Goals) for Clean Water and Proper Sanitation, Climate Change Management, and Ocean Ecosystems; where through these coral reefs it is hoped that there will be a sustainability of the ecosystem both for marine life and can help improve environmental and social economic development so as to encourage the area to become an increasingly viable tourism area.
PELNI as a State-Owned Enterprise which is engaged in sea transportation has currently operated 26 passenger ships and stopped at 83 ports and served 1,100 segments.
Apart from passenger transportation, PELNI also serves 45 pioneer ship routes which are a means of accessibility for population mobility in the 3TP area where pioneer ships stop at 275 ports with 3,739 sections. PELNI also operates as many as 20 Rede ships. Meanwhile, in the logistics business, PELNI currently operates 4 cargo ships, 8 sea toll ships and 1 special livestock ship.
