KM Umsini Experiences Incident in Makassar, No Fatalities

PELNI apologizes for the inconvenience to passengers due to this incident

Jakarta, June 9, 2024 -- PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia or PT PELNI (Persero) informs of a fire incident experienced by KM Umsini while docking at Soekarno-Hatta Port, Makassar, Sunday (9/6). Currently the fire has been successfully extinguished and there were no fatalities from this incident.

Head of PELNI Corporate Secretariat Evan Eryanto said the source of the fire was first discovered at 04.20 WITA which was suspected to have come from a spark in the auxiliary motor in the engine room. The fire was successfully extinguished at 09.03 WITA.

"Currently, the fire has been successfully extinguished and there were no fatalities. The ship's crew quickly tried to extinguish it using the CO2 extinguisher available on board, and at the same time unloaded passengers to the pier. We are currently continuing to coordinate with all relevant parties," said Evan.

At the time of the incident, there were 1,677 people on board the ship bound for Surabaya, Jakarta and Kijang. Evan added that connecting passengers will be transported using another PELNI ship that will pass through Makassar.

"Passengers bound for Surabaya and Kijang will be transported using KM Labobar on Tuesday (11/6), while connecting passengers to Jakarta will be transported by KM Dorolonda on the same day, all departing from Makassar," added Evan.

The impact and cause of the fire itself will be examined immediately after the cooling process is complete. Evan expressed his gratitude to all parties who helped in the fire handling process, including the Makassar City Fire Department who had prepared 13 (thirteen) fire engines at the pier when the incident occurred.

"We apologize for the inconvenience felt by passengers due to this incident. We will fulfill the needs of continuing passengers while waiting for the ship. We also appeal to all prospective customers to be able to adjust their trips.
